The Northwest Missouri Regional Solid Waste Management District contracts with the Northwest Missouri Regional Council of Governments to perform administrative duties assigned by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. This district serves as a regional solid waste planning agency for local governments in Atchison, Gentry, Holt, Nodaway, and Worth Counties in Missouri.
The Solid Waste Planner devotes time toward the development and implementation of a solid waste management plan for the five-county area and oversees the regulatory and administrative documentation necessary to stay in compliance with state statutes as well as organizing special collections to help area citizens discard hazardous or landfill-banned items.
The Northwest Missouri Solid Waste Management District Grant Program provides grant funds to local governments, private businesses, not-for-profit organizations and individuals for implementing waste reduction, reuse and recycling projects. Funds can be used for various programs including education, waste reduction, re-use, recycling, composting, collection and processing, research and development and market development for products made with diverted materials. Both public and private entities are eligible for District grant funds contingent upon executive board approval. The Solid Waste Management district board is comprised of county- and city-appointed representatives throughout the five-county area.
