Planning & Development

NORTHWEST MISSOURI SAFER ROADS

We can all help create safer roads for Northwest Missouri.

The Northwest Missouri Regional Council of Governments is continuing its unwavering commitment to the well-being of residents and visitors.

We are dedicated to establishing a systems-based and inclusive safety approach through NWMO Safer Roads, which is a data-driven strategy to ensure that streets and roads become vibrant spaces that everyone feels safe using. This work will enable the full potential of the region to flourish as we collectively strive towards the goal of reducing fatalities and serious crashes on roadways among all road users.

NWMO Safer Roads will enhance safety, improve public health, and prioritize community mobility and access. NWMO Safer Roads is process-driven to deliver informed, data-based decisions, and this work is committed to listening to public and stakeholder input and integrating feedback into the plan.

Safe System Approach

NWMO Safer Roads is a strategy that uses the Safe System Approach that identifies the high-risk locations in the five counties of Northwest Missouri (Atchinson, Gentry, Holt, Nodaway and Worth) by developing High Injury Areas to pinpoint intersections and road segments with high crash rates, including data for highways and local roads, as well as for driving, walking, and cycling. By combining data analysis and YOUR feedback, NWMO Safer Roads is aligned with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All initiative, which supports a worldwide effort to reduce roadway fatalities and serious injuries and to strengthen roadway safety for all users.
